The Tokamachi Kimono Festival

Tokamachi has a unique history as a kimono and textile production town. The popularity of high-class textiles such as Tokamachi Akashi-chijimi and Tokamachi Gasuri helped to drive Tokamachi’s economy in the post war period, while gaining it nationwide acclaim as a “town of kimono”. Tokamachi is second only to Kyoto when it comes to kimono weaving and dyeing practices.

The Tokamachi Kimono Festival is a proud and radiant celebration of this colourful culture and history. The center of town is brushed with the bright colours and elaborate patterns of the Japanese kimono, worn by people of all ages and gender. The event features parades as well as a coming age of ceremony for 20 year olds, and there is also a kimono market. For the visitor from outside Tokamachi, it’s a rare chance to appreciate the artisanship and tradition behind this eloquent garment. There is also the opportunity for anyone to wear a kimono and participate in the festival (this includes having a professional’s help in putting it on).x
